Mazda RX-7 Highlights:

  • Design: Sleek, low-slung, and curvaceous body styling that’s still considered one of the most beautiful JDM designs.
  • Handling: Double wishbone suspension front and rear; praised for its balance and agility.
  • Aftermarket Tuning: A cult classic in the tuning community, known for its modification potential.
  • Pop-Up Headlights: Adds to the car’s iconic 90s aesthetic.
  • Rarity: Especially in the U.S., clean examples have become increasingly valuable and collectible.

Common Mazda RX-7 Issues:

  • Apex Seal Wear: Rotary engines are notorious for apex seal degradation.
  • Turbo Reliability: The stock sequential twin-turbo system is complex and can be finicky.
  • Cooling Needs: The engine runs hot and needs excellent cooling systems to remain healthy.
  • Maintenance-Intensive: Notoriously high-maintenance compared to piston engines.

Notable Mazda RX-7 Variants:

  • Efini RX-7 (Japan only): Sold under Mazda’s luxury sub-brand.
  • R1/R2 Models (U.S.): Performance-focused versions with upgraded suspension and oil coolers.
  • Spirit R (Japan, 2002): Final and most desirable edition with 1,504 units made, featuring lightweight BBS wheels, red Recaro seats, and other enhancements.

The FD3S RX-7 remains a JDM legend and one of the most engaging driver’s cars ever made.
